The ladies who work here are absolutely amazing and so kind!
By the Nove Academy Team | Nove Salon & Esthetics Wholesale
You’ve finished the shape, your colour looks beautiful, and now it’s time for the top coat. Easy enough—until you’re choosing between glossy, matte, no-wipe, soak-off, and a few bottles that all sound like they do the same thing.
The good news? You don’t need one top coat that does absolutely everything. You need the right finish for the set in front of you. Let’s walk through the differences and the options from Akzentz, Amore, BEMI, Magic, Loona, Phat Kat, Roselisa, and Young Nails at Nove.
The quick answer: A gel top coat is the finishing layer that gives a manicure its gloss, matte texture, or decorative effect. Choose one that works with the gel underneath, your artwork, and your removal plan. No-wipe describes the finishing step; soak-off describes removal. Neither term alone tells you which top coat is best.

What to Look For: A clear gloss compatible with your colour or enhancement
An Option to Explore: BEMI Ultra Shine
A soft matte finish
What to Look For: A matte top with the right removal and finishing steps

Chrome artwork
What to Look For: A surface intended to accept chrome powder
An Option to Explore: Akzentz Shine-On
Chrome only on selected details
What to Look For: A powder-repelling background for isolation designs
An Option to Explore: BEMI Ultra Slick Matte
Some extra sparkle
What to Look For: An effect top that adds shimmer or flakes
An Option to Explore: Phat Kat Aura Shine
These are starting points, not interchangeable bottles. Check that your chosen top works with the products underneath and the removal method you plan to use.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Make two swatches of the same colour—one glossy and one matte. It’s a lovely way to help clients choose, and it shows just how much the top coat changes the finished look.
Wipe, No-Wipe, Soak-Off — Let’s Make It Simple
Wipe vs. no-wipe
A wipe top coat leaves a sticky surface layer after curing that you remove with the recommended cleanser. A no-wipe top finishes without that step. Neither is automatically better; it’s about the finish and application routine you need.
For example, Akzentz Luxio Gloss is finished with Akzentz Prep & Wipe. Keep lint-free wipes at your station so loose fibres don’t spoil your final step.
Soak-off vs. file-off
Think about removal before you apply the top. Luxio Gloss and BEMI Ultra Shine and Ultra Matte are soak-off options. Akzentz Shine-On, Diamond Shine-On, Matte-On, and Ultra Gloss are hard-gel finishes that don’t soak off.
If you put a file-off top over a soak-off colour, that top layer needs to be removed as directed before you soak the colour underneath. And a soak-off top won’t make a hard-gel builder dissolve.
Thin, thicker, flexible, or rigid?
A thin top adds little bulk. A more viscous top gives you more product to control and may help smooth the reflection. Either way, finish your shaping first instead of trying to hide an uneven enhancement under extra top coat.
Flexibility matters, too. A rigid finish and a flexible gel-polish service aren’t automatically a good match. Follow the intended use for the particular product.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Keep a little reference card at your station: product, lamp, cure time, wipe or no-wipe, and removal method. It’s especially helpful when you use more than one brand.
Nove’s Top Three Bestselling Dedicated Gel Top Coats
These were the first three dedicated top coats in our Nail Gels Bestsellers order on October 5, 2026. We’ve kept builders that also finish glossy, such as Sculpt & Shine and Trinity, separate from this list.
1. Akzentz Shine-On — 15 ml
A thin, self-levelling no-wipe gloss that also works with effect and chrome powders. If chrome is part of your artwork, this is the Shine-On version to look at.
Keep in mind: it’s a hard-gel finish, so plan for file-off removal and follow Akzentz’s powder application steps.
2. BEMI Ultra Matte — 15 ml
A soak-off finish for giving your colour a soft, non-glossy look. It’s a useful choice when your client wants to change the feel of a familiar shade without choosing a whole new colour.
Keep in mind: matte changes the reflection of glitter and cat eye, too. Swatch it first, and follow the bottle’s curing and finishing instructions.
3. Akzentz Diamond Shine-On — 15 ml
A medium-viscosity, no-wipe hard-gel top developed for enhanced clarity and scratch resistance. It’s worth comparing for a smooth, glossy colour finish.
Keep in mind: Akzentz advises against using it for chrome/effect powders, over glossy no-wipe surfaces, or over itself. Original Shine-On and Diamond aren’t interchangeable for every design.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Before reaching for your favourite top, ask: what’s underneath, what artwork am I doing, and how will I remove this set? Those three questions narrow the choices quickly.
Akzentz — Match the Finish to Your Service
- Luxio Gloss: a medium-viscosity, self-levelling soak-off gloss for the Luxio system. Choose it when you want to keep that soak-off service, and remember the final cleansing step.
- Pro-Formance Ultra Gloss: a rigid hard-gel finish designed for stain resistance. It calls for a slightly thicker application than a standard top, then cooling and cleansing. You’ll need a gel brush and a file-off removal plan.
- Matte-On: a self-levelling hard-gel matte for cured Akzentz systems. It needs its inhibition layer cleansed to reveal the finish and does not soak off.
Stain-resistant doesn’t mean stain-proof, and scratch-resistant doesn’t mean scratch-proof. Those features can help guide your choice, but everyday wear and client habits still matter.
Amore Ultima — A Few Different Ways to Finish
Sculpt & Shine
This medium-viscosity sculpting gel can also give you a glossy finish. It’s a useful multi-purpose option within an Amore service and a Nove bestseller in its own right. Expect it to handle like a sculpting gel rather than a thin bottle top.
Quick Shine
A thin, flexible, tack-free UV/LED top that Amore identifies as HEMA-free. A good one to compare when you want a flexible Amore finish without a final wipe.
Gloss Top Gel
A thin, flexible, self-levelling gloss described as adhering to shiny surfaces. It has a clear-violet tint, so test it over your chosen colour to see the finished effect.
Crystal Gloss
A very thin, clear, rigid finish positioned for scratch resistance. Its listing states that it contains HEMA, so it isn’t a HEMA-free substitute for Quick Shine.
Want a little sparkle? Shimmer Ice adds an effect of its own. Nove lists a newer UV/LED formula introduced in 2025, so use the instructions that match your jar rather than an older application sheet.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: A product name can stay the same when a formula changes. When you open a new bottle or jar, take a moment to check the current curing instructions.
BEMI — Gloss, Matte, and a Clever Chrome Helper
BEMI Ultra Shine gives you a glossy soak-off finish. Ultra Matte gives you the soft, velvety alternative. Both are useful to have when clients like to switch between finishes.
Ultra Slick Matte has a different job. This no-wipe top repels pigment powder, helping keep the background clean when you’re doing chrome isolation designs. You want the chrome on selected details, not everywhere.
That also explains why Ultra Slick Matte isn’t the surface to use when you want chrome to stick across the whole nail. It’s doing exactly the opposite job.
For a design to pair with your finishing choices, explore BEMI Creami Cat Eye — Moonlight. Our cat eye guide walks you through the magnetic step before you top coat.
Magic — Everyday Finishes and Artwork Options
- NailGuard Tackless Hyper Shine: a self-levelling no-wipe gloss designed for scratch and stain resistance. An option to explore for your everyday Magic service.
- NailGuard Tackless Glass Finish: a thin-to-medium top developed for working beneath larger Magies pieces, also usable on its own. It’s described as brightening light colours. Hyper Shine can also be used under Magies, so you don’t necessarily need a separate bottle for every design.
- NailGuard Tackless Lux Matte: a no-wipe option for a velvet-like matte finish.
Magic’s Diffusing Matte Top has its own UV curing instructions—don’t borrow the NailGuard schedule. And if you want the top coat to add sparkle, take a look at Shimmer Top — Delicate Gold.
Loona Nails — Clear, Milky, Matte, and Flakes
Two clear options have a useful difference: Crystal Top Coat No Wipe contains a UV filter, while Glossy Gloss Top No Wipe is described as having no UV filter and a medium consistency. Compare them over your actual colour. A UV filter in a top coat is not sunscreen for your client’s skin.
For something different, try Velvet Matte, Eggshell Matte with black flakes, Milky Top, or Gold Flakes Top. These finishes deliberately change the colour’s appearance, which is part of the fun.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Show the finished swatch, not just the colour underneath. A milky top, flakes, or matte finish can make the same shade look quite different.
Phat Kat — Read the Finish on the Bottle
Phat Kat’s Shine No Wipe, Matte Wipe, and Velvet Matte No Wipe tell you something important right in their names. Make sure you follow the finishing steps for the version you have.
Aura Shine No Wipe adds ultra-fine sparkle flakes and is listed as soak-off, TPO-free, and HEMA-free. It’s a lovely option when sparkle is part of the design; choose a plain clear top when you don’t want that extra effect.
Roselisa and Young Nails — Choose for What’s Underneath
Roselisa Matte Top Coat is a soak-off finish intended for Roselisa Gel Polish, Base Coat, and Gel Builder services. It gives you a matte option within that system.
Young Nails Stain Resistant Gel Top Coat is intended for acrylic and hard-gel enhancements. Don’t automatically carry that recommendation over to flexible soak-off gel polish.
There’s also Young Nails Finish Clear, which finishes without a sticky layer, and Synergy Gloss, a self-levelling hard-gel top. Pick the one that belongs in your service rather than treating all three as the same finish.
What About TPO-Free and HEMA-Free?
These labels can be confusing, so let’s separate them.
TPO is a photoinitiator—an ingredient that helps start the curing reaction under suitable light. On an ingredient list, its name is Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide. A TPO-free gel uses a different photoinitiator formulation.
HEMA is a different ingredient. HEMA-free and TPO-free are separate claims, and neither means that a gel is free of every possible allergen.
Does TPO-free mean a better top coat? The label alone won’t tell you how shiny, flexible, or scratch-resistant it is. A well-formulated TPO-free top can give you the finish you want; TPO’s presence doesn’t prove better performance either. Compare the actual product and its instructions.
Why is TPO-free getting attention? The EU prohibited TPO in cosmetics from September 1, 2025, following its reproductive-toxicity classification. Its guidance includes professional use and older stock. That is an EU rule, not a statement that Canada has the same ban; Canadian requirements must be checked separately.
What changes at your station? When a product is reformulated, check its application and lamp instructions. And if you’re choosing a TPO-free or HEMA-free service, check every layer—not just the top coat.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Keep uncured gel off the skin, whichever formula you choose. If a client develops a suspected reaction, stop the service and recommend medical assessment. Don’t try a different uncured gel on their skin to see whether it’s better.
Curing — Give Each Product the Time It Needs
It’s tempting to use the same lamp button for everything. The products below show why that can trip you up. These are product-specific instructions, not times to transfer to an unrelated lamp or formula. Always check the current label and recommended lamp.
- Akzentz Shine-On and Diamond Shine-On: 30 seconds in an Akzentz LED lamp; no final wipe.
- Akzentz Luxio Gloss: 30 seconds in an Akzentz LED lamp, then Prep & Wipe.
- Akzentz Ultra Gloss: 30 seconds in an Akzentz LED lamp; the instructions include cooling for 10–15 seconds before cleansing.
- Amore Quick Shine: 90 seconds LED or 120 seconds UV.
- Amore Sculpt & Shine: two-minute full cure in the specified UV or hybrid low-heat procedure. Its 20-second freeze cure is not the full cure.
- Amore Gloss Top and Crystal Gloss: the listings specify 2–3 minutes in their UV/hybrid low-heat procedure.
- Magic NailGuard Hyper Shine, Glass Finish, and Lux Matte: listings specify 60 seconds LED or three minutes UV.
- Phat Kat Aura Shine: listing specifies 60 seconds LED or 90 seconds UV.
- BEMI tops: check the current bottle instructions for the correct lamp and full cure time.
With Luxio Gloss, have your Prep & Wipe ready for the final cleanse. With Ultra Gloss, remember its cooling step before cleansing. Small finishing details can make a noticeable difference.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: A surface that feels hard isn’t proof that the whole layer cured properly. Use the right lamp, thickness, and full cure time rather than judging by touch.
When Your Finish Isn’t Quite Right
- Dull or streaky? Check the layer thickness, cure, cleanser, and any cooling step before changing products.
- Peeling? Look for dust or oil on the surface, and check that the top can go over that particular layer. Diamond Shine-On’s restrictions are a good example.
- Cracking? Review the structure underneath, its flexibility, and your top-coat thickness.
- Chrome everywhere—or nowhere? Check which layer should accept the powder and which should repel it. Shine-On and Ultra Slick Matte serve different roles.
- Patchy matte? Check coverage and finishing instructions. Loona’s Velvet and Eggshell Matte call for a 60-second cooling period before touching or applying cuticle oil.
- An unexpected tint? Compare a finished swatch in normal light. Some tops brighten or tint the colour rather than leaving it completely unchanged.
A Few More Questions
What is the difference between gel top coat and base coat?
Base coat is the foundation used beneath colour according to the gel system. Top coat is the finishing layer over the completed colour or enhancement. Use each for its intended job unless the manufacturer specifically identifies a multi-purpose product.
Can I use any no-wipe top coat for chrome nails?
No. No-wipe means the top does not need a final cleanse; it does not guarantee chrome compatibility. Akzentz recommends original Shine-On for effect powders, while Diamond Shine-On has different restrictions. BEMI Ultra Slick Matte repels powder for isolation work.
Does TPO-free mean HEMA-free?
No. TPO and HEMA are different ingredients. A formula may be free of one and contain the other. Check the exact product, and remember that either claim alone does not mean allergy-free.
Can I mix brands?
Use combinations the manufacturers support. A swatch helps you judge the look, but it can’t prove that an unsupported combination cures properly.
Which top coat lasts the longest?
There isn’t one winner for every client. The system underneath, application, cure, and everyday habits all play a part. Keep notes on how your clients’ sets wear so you can make useful adjustments.
Is no-wipe always the easiest choice?
It saves a cleansing step, but a wipe top might be the better match for the finish or removal method you want. Choose for the complete service.
Build a Finishing Kit You’ll Actually Use
Start with a compatible everyday gloss and a matte option. Add a specialist finish when your services call for it—chrome, decorative effects, or stain resistance. A smaller selection that you know well can be more useful than a drawer full of bottles you’re unsure about.
