A beautiful gel set starts before the first brushstroke. Knowing your products, checking in with your client, and keeping your application controlled all help you build a service you can feel confident about.

You don’t need to memorize every chemical name on a bottle. Start by understanding what the ingredients do, which instructions belong to your gel system, and where a few thoughtful habits can make a difference.

The quick answer: Keep uncured gel off skin, use the lamp and curing instructions recommended for your exact products, and prepare the natural nail gently. Ingredient claims are useful information, but they don’t replace careful application or a client consultation.

Get to Know What’s in Your Gel

Canadian cosmetic labels use INCI names—standardized ingredient names that help you identify what is in a formula. Check the actual bottle and current manufacturer information, especially when a familiar product has been reformulated.

A gel’s ingredients work together: reactive ingredients form the coating as it cures, photoinitiators respond to the curing light, pigments provide colour, and other ingredients help control consistency and storage stability.

What about HEMA-free and TPO-free?

HEMA and TPO have different jobs in a formula. HEMA is a methacrylate ingredient; TPO is a photoinitiator. Being free of one does not tell you whether a product contains the other.

HEMA-free does not mean allergy-free. Other acrylate and methacrylate ingredients may also cause allergic reactions. A client who has reacted to gel should seek medical advice before trying another formula.

Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Keep a simple product reference folder with current ingredient lists, application instructions, and available safety data sheets. Add the recommended lamp and cure time so you can find everything together.

Start with a Quick Client Check-In

A few questions before you begin can tell you more than guessing from the previous set. Ask about past reactions to nail products, current irritation, and anything unusual since the last appointment.

  • Ask about symptoms: itching, redness, swelling, blistering, or discomfort after a previous service.
  • Look at the nails and surrounding skin: postpone work over broken, inflamed, or visibly unhealthy areas and recommend appropriate assessment.
  • Keep useful notes: record products used and any concerns your client reports.

Lifting alone does not confirm an allergy. Likewise, a technician should not diagnose a rash or assume that switching primers will solve a reaction.

Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Ask, “How did your nails feel between appointments?” along with “How did they wear?” It gives clients an easy opening to mention itching or tenderness.

Prepare Gently, Then Follow Your System

Good prep gives your products a suitable surface. It should not leave the natural nail sore or unnecessarily thin.

  1. Begin with clean hands, processed tools, and a reset station. Our cleaning and disinfecting guide walks through the routine.
  2. Assess existing product. Remove lifted material and follow the system’s removal or rebalance method. Sound product does not automatically need complete removal at every fill.
  3. Shape and prepare carefully. Use the file and surface preparation specified for your system. Avoid excessive buffing and damaging surrounding skin.
  4. Remove dust and cleanse as directed. Let air-drying prep products dry as instructed, and avoid touching the prepared nail.
  5. Use primer and base where instructed. Keep them on the nail plate. Adding extra products is not a substitute for following the correct sequence.

Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Lay out your prep products in the order you use them. It is a small change that makes missed steps easier to spot.

Keep Product Placement and Curing Consistent

Uncured gel touching skin and insufficient curing can contribute to allergy risk. Controlled placement and the correct lamp are central to your routine.

  • Leave the skin clear. If gel touches the sidewalls or surrounding skin, remove the contamination carefully before curing, following the product’s handling guidance.
  • Match thickness to the product. Colour coats and structural builder layers have different application instructions. Avoid piling on colour for coverage.
  • Use the recommended lamp and full cure time. A lamp’s wattage alone does not establish compatibility. Follow the instructions for the exact formula.
  • Check hand position. Help clients keep their nails correctly positioned, including thumbs, throughout the required cycle.
  • Avoid bare-skin contact. Follow safety guidance for suitable gloves and change contaminated gloves promptly. Do not wipe gel brushes on your skin.

Don’t test curing by pressing the gel. A hard surface does not establish an adequate cure throughout the coating. Some products also leave an intentional sticky surface layer, which needs the manufacturer’s finishing procedure.

Maintain dust capture for filing and appropriate ventilation for the products you use. A filing-dust collector is not automatically a vapour-control system. Our nail ventilation guide explains the different roles.

Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Put your system’s cure instructions beside the lamp. It keeps the correct settings handy when you change colours or move between services.

Send Clients Home with Simple Advice

Keep aftercare easy to remember: don’t pick or peel gel, don’t use enhancements as tools, and arrange maintenance or removal when needed. Cuticle oil can support a comfortable skin-care routine, but it does not prevent a gel allergy.

Ask clients to report lifting or damage early. If they develop itching, swelling, blistering, or a rash, advise them to seek medical assessment and pause further gel services rather than covering the problem with fresh product.

Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Give aftercare in writing as well as verbally. A short message is easier to revisit than a conversation at the end of an appointment.

A Few Common Questions

Can I use a HEMA-free gel on someone who has reacted before?

Do not assume it is suitable. Other ingredients may also cause reactions. Ask the client to obtain medical advice before another gel service.

Does every gel service need primer?

No. Follow the complete instructions for your system and the condition of the nail. More primer is not automatically better preparation.

Can I cure gel in any UV/LED lamp?

Use the lamp and settings recommended for the exact product. Similar appearance or a higher wattage does not prove that another lamp will cure it correctly.

Do I need to know every ingredient by heart?

No. Know where to find current ingredient and safety information, understand the main functions, and ask the manufacturer when something is unclear.
