Transfer foils can turn a simple colour into something special without a lot of hand painting. The trick is getting the decoration onto the nail cleanly—and keeping it looking good when you finish.
If your foil only transfers in spots, start with the surface, the product instructions, and the way the foil meets the nail. A more predictable routine is usually more useful than pressing harder.
The quick answer: Choose a transfer foil and dedicated foil gel, follow the gel’s cure instructions, press the carrier into complete contact without sliding it, and finish with a compatible top coat.
Start with the Finish You Want
A scattered metallic accent and a complete snowflake pattern ask different things of your foil. With an accent, a few broken edges can be part of the look. With a printed design, placement and complete contact matter much more.
- A little shine: choose a metallic foil and plan a few small areas.
- A recognisable pattern: decide where the design should sit before you touch the nail.
- Full coverage: practise on a tip first, especially around the curve and sidewalls.

Coconoir Beauty Mixed Metallics Foils
A 10-pack for exploring metallic accents. Try one colour across a few practice tips before combining several finishes in a set.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Put the foil beside the colour swatch before you start. A quick look at the two together is easier than changing your mind halfway through an accent nail.
Use a Gel Made for Transfer Foils
The sticky layer on a colour gel is not automatically a foil adhesive. A dedicated transfer gel gives you a more deliberate starting point, with its own application and curing instructions.

Profiles Stick It Foil Gel — 10 ml
A light-curable transfer gel for use over gel polish, hard gel, or acrylic. Profiles lists 30 seconds in LED or 60 seconds in UV before pressing in the transfer foil. Follow the current product instructions and the manufacturer’s compatible lamp guidance.
Those timings belong to Stick It. Keep them separate from the cure required for your colour and finishing products, and do not shorten a cure to make the surface feel stickier. Keep uncured gel off the skin.
A Simple Transfer Routine
- Finish the base. Prepare the nail and apply and cure the underlying colour or enhancement according to its system.
- Cut and position. Have a manageable foil piece ready. Check which side transfers; follow the foil instructions rather than guessing from shine alone.
- Apply the transfer gel. Use an even layer on the area you want to decorate, keeping it off the skin. Cure as directed.
- Press with control. Hold the foil still and work across the intended area so it contacts the nail’s curve. Avoid sliding a printed design around.
- Lift and inspect. Remove the carrier and check coverage before adding the finishing product.
- Seal the design. Follow the transfer gel and top coat instructions, covering the artwork and finishing the free edge as directed. Cure the top coat fully.

Coconoir Beauty White Snowflake Foil #2
A printed foil for practising deliberate placement. Choose the part of the pattern you want to show, then test the design over your planned background colour.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: For a printed foil, choose one focal point per nail. It gives you somewhere specific to aim and makes it easier to spot if the carrier has shifted.
If the Foil Looks Patchy
Almost nothing transferred
Check the transfer side, gel instructions, lamp compatibility, and whether the foil made contact. Change one thing on a practice tip so you can see what helps.
The middle worked, but the sides missed
Look at contact around the nail’s curve. A flat foil piece can bridge over the sides. Try a smaller piece or a smaller accent area before adding more gel.
The pattern looks doubled or stretched
Check whether the carrier moved while you pressed it. Hold it in place and work methodically rather than repeatedly lifting and repositioning it.
It looked good until the top coat
Test the finishing combination on a tip. Follow the foil gel’s recommended finish; do not assume every top coat will preserve every foil effect.
Pro Tip from Nove Academy: Keep a successful foil tip with a small note: colour, transfer gel, lamp and cure, foil, and top coat. That little recipe saves a lot of experimenting next time.
Transfer Foil or Foil Flakes?
Transfer foil leaves its decoration behind when you remove the carrier sheet. Loose flakes are pieces you place into the design and seal according to your gel system. They give a different kind of control.

Profiles Pure Copper Foil Flakes
Loose pieces for a placed metallic detail. Choose flakes when you want to arrange individual accents; do not use the transfer-sheet routine as their application instructions.

A Few Common Questions
Do I need a special gel for nail transfer foils?
A dedicated transfer gel is a useful starting point. Follow its instructions; the sticky layer of an ordinary colour gel is not automatically intended for foil transfer.
How long do I cure Profiles Stick It foil gel?
Profiles lists 30 seconds in LED or 60 seconds in UV for Stick It before pressing in transfer foil. Follow the current instructions and compatible lamp guidance; other gels may require different curing.
Why is my nail foil only transferring in patches?
Check the transfer side, the foil gel application and cure, and contact across the nail’s curve. Test one change at a time on a practice tip.
Should I slide the foil across the nail?
Keep a printed foil still while making contact. Sliding or repeatedly repositioning the carrier can disturb the pattern.
Do nail transfer foils need a top coat?
Finish and seal the design according to the foil gel and compatible top coat instructions. Test the combination on a practice tip before using a new pairing on a client.
Are foil flakes applied like transfer sheets?
No. Transfer sheets leave decoration behind when the carrier is removed. Loose flakes are placed individually and sealed according to the enhancement system.
A Little Preparation Makes Foils More Fun
Start with one foil, one colour, and a small accent. Once you have a combination that works, it is much easier to build a bolder design without losing that clean finish.
